Kumi places high value on mutual respect, safety, and clean execution. Techniques must demonstrate control rather than brute force. Athletes are expected to maintain composure, honor referee decisions, and embody the principles of the WKA at all times.
Bouts consist of up to three rounds, each 3 minutes long, with 90 seconds of rest between rounds.
If a draw occurs after regulation, a sudden victory round begins with no time limit, ending upon the first point or fall.
All matches are conducted in a WKA-approved ring or enclosure, overseen by certified referees and officials.
Note: No points for takedowns ending directly in Guard unless positional control is established.
To protect competitors, the following are not allowed:
Heel hooks or submissions twisting the knee
Suplexes or slams, especially onto the head/neck
Chokes applying direct cervical pressure (e.g., can openers, guillotines)
Joint manipulation of fingers/toes (less than 3)
All forms of striking
1 point penalty for rule violations
2 points for intentional fouls
Disqualification for unsportsmanlike conduct, excessive stalling, or ignoring referee commands
Mouthguards and groin protection are mandatory.
Men: Grappling shorts, no shirt
Women: Grappling shorts and short-sleeve compression shirt
No gear creating unfair advantage; braces/supports must be approved
